    Writing Placement Assessment

Wright State's writing placement assessment is an online tool used to determine the correct writing course for you. The assessment is completed online and consists of an article for you to read and two writing tasks. After reading the provided article, write a one-paragraph summary and an essay based on the article.

Once you begin the assessment, you will have a 24-hour period to read the article, write, and upload your summary and essay. We encourage you to complete your assessment at home or where you normally write. Take the time to think carefully about your writing and revise and edit your work before submitting your assessment. Please feel free to print off the article in order to annotate/take notes as you read. You are also permitted to use a dictionary, thesaurus, and spellchecker at your discretion.

The writing placement assessment is similar to a number of reading and writing assignments in our first composition course. The most successful responses will demonstrate:

    • your ability to follow directions.
    • your ability to understand a brief text and summarize the main points in your own words.
    • your ability to write a thoughtful, well developed essay that is well organized, coherent, and grammatically and mechanically correct.

After you submit your summary and article, two faculty members will evaluate your submission and determine your placement. The faculty members evaluating your work are experienced writing instructors who teach ENG 1100, and are trained in assessment.

Begin your writing placement assessment at a time when you know the next 24 hours are convenient for you. Give yourself plenty of time to complete the reading and writing. Remember, once you begin, you must complete the assessment within 24 hours! You may only complete the assessment once!
